Cyclops Baitfish
Scientific Fly
When a long, thin minnow pattern is called for, the Cyclops Baitfish is a great choice. The profile is similar to a Clouser Minnow, but the bead and resin coated belly allow the fly to slide through vegetation more easily than patterns with standard dumbbell eyes. The fly works well on redfish, speckled trout, snook. small tarpon, largemouth bass, and anything else that eats smallish thin baitfish.
This fly is a commercially tied variation of an in-house pattern. The original is tied with bucktail and a standard brass Cyclops Bead. This one is tied with synthetic hair (Grip Profiler Fiber) and an offset tungsten bead. Information on the original pattern, including tying instructions and a link to an instructional tying video, can be found on the Tying the Cyclops Baitfish page.
